The Swiss Guards are the Swiss soldiers who took an oath of loyalty to the Pope. In 1506 Pope Julius II invite the Helvetian soldiers known for their courage, noble sentiments, and loyalty. They played a major role in the history of European politics. Allies of Pope Julius II they helped shaped Italy’s destiny and was granted by the Pope ” Defenders of the Church’s freedom”. Since 1506 Swiss Guards mission was to protect the Pope and his residence. For 500 years the mission have not changed also their outfit for that matter. Dress in the traditional renaissance uniform call “Gala Uniform”. Over 500 years the Swiss Guard has been at the service of the Popes and has been watching over the Vatican.
