The Doni Tondo is Michelangelo’s only surviving completed panel painting, and resides in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Tondo translates to “round” (as it was painted on a round panel) and was commissioned by Agnolo Doni, hence the name of the piece.
The painting features the holy family – Mary, Joseph and Jesus as a child. The Doni Tondo is condsidered to have been an influence for aspects of mannerism – such as the bizarre poses and luminous colors.
The Doni Tondo is still displayed inside of it’s original frame – carved wood designed by Michelangelo to compliment the piece.
