La Specola is a Museum of Zoology and Natural History located in Florence. La Specola (translates to Observatory) opened in 1775, making it the oldest scientific museum in Europe. It is known most for its collection of wax anatomical models, which date back to the 18th century. Some of the wax models are arranged in more erotic poses similar to those found in paintings – except with their ribcages torn open displaying their inner organs or their skin removed to show their muscles and vasculature systems. Ew.
La Specola also displays taxidermy, including some extinct species and this “very questionable” hippopotamus stuffed by craftsmen who never actually saw a living hippo.
