The Modonna was painted between 1605 and 1606. It depicts Christ and the Virgin treading on the serpent of heresy. It is considered one of Caravaggio’s least successful pieces. It has stiff figures which are swamped with darkness in the room.  It was thought to be indecent by the authorities and was later removed from the altar in St. Peters after two days.
