Christ Giving the Keys to St. Peter
1481 – 1482
330 cm x 550 cm
Sistine Chapel, Rome
The subject matter of this paitning was taken from Mathew 16:13-19. The keys Christ is giving Peter represent the keys of the kingdom of heaven. The keys symbolize the power to forgive and share the world of God, giving them the power to allow others into heaven. The main figures are represented in a frieze in two compressed rows. The figures are composed in a graceful and elegant manner with a lot of attention placed on minor details. This can me seen through their dynamic poses and detailed drapery. The composition is done in a one point linear perspective with diagonal orthogonal lines creating impressive depth within the painting.
