Cosmati floor in the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome
Cosmati are mosaic inlaid floors and other architectural features of glass and marble made by one of the four generations of the Cosmati family. Beginning in the 12th century, in and around Rome the Cosmatis decorated floors, columns, friezes and more with geometric shaped pieces of brilliantly colored glass and tiles inlaid into white marble. Laurentius Cosmati was the first and he was trained by Greeks but he developed his own style, which moved away from Byzantine influences.
