Arno River and flooding

November 4th, 1966 the Arno River, located in Florence, flooded to over 11 meters due to excessive rainfall over a 24 hour period.  The river is prone to flooding and has done so on almost 50 other minor occasions.  But never before had it resulted in so many deaths and damage done to the town.  Many people were left homeless and numerous manuscripts and art pieces were lost or destroyed.
